When checking out a new country, travel expenses can really take a toll on your budget, making it tough for travelers to include many stops in their plans. But imagine if you could fly around the country for free?.

The Southeast Asian country has revealed a new tourism initiative that, if it gets the green light, will allow visitors from certain countries to discover local spots without any additional charges.

What’s The Deal

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports in Thailand has come up with the “Buy International, Get Free Domestic Flights in Thailand” campaign.

This means that international visitors from selected countries will receive at least two free domestic flight tickets.

People booking flights on airline websites, using multi city options, fly-thru services, or through online travel agents can take advantage of this offer, provided they have a standard international ticket to Thailand.

Plus, there’s a 20 kg baggage allowance included.

Each ticket costs a maximum of 1,750 baht for a one way trip or 3,500 baht for a round trip.

This initiative will be launched in collaboration with six leading Thai airlines:

  • Thai AirAsia
  • Bangkok Airways
  • Nok Air
  • Thai Airways International
  • Thai Lion Air
  • Thai VietJet.

Even though the campaign isn’t officially up and running yet, the ministry is looking to get the Cabinet’s approval for 700 million baht next week.

Why is Thailand taking this approach?

Thailand has consistently focused on boosting tourism worldwide. With attractive travel deals and regular promotional events, the country is eager to attract visitors.

Especially in India, the focus of the destination has been to shift its image towards being a family friendly spot, moving away from its earlier reputation as a party hub and it has made some progress in that direction.

On the other hand, Thailand has experienced a significant increase in tourist numbers over the years, but a large portion of these visitors tend to flock to well known places like Krabi or Phuket.

The ministry has wisely picked September, October, and November for the campaign, as these months are typically less appealing for tourists due to the heavy monsoon rains.

With the main tourist spots becoming less attractive, travelers might want to check out some off the beaten path locations, which could really help spread the tourism dollars more evenly across the country.

The goal is to attract at least 200,000 international visitors, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will be in charge of this initiative.

Thai spots to steer clear of right now
Being a coastal nation, Thailand goes through some pretty intense monsoon seasons, with rain disrupting the usual hustle and bustle of its cities.

Although the rainfall isn’t consistent all over the mainland, most of the well known tourist spots take a bigger hit and can be trickier to visit during this period.
