Group Calling Comes To WhatsApp
Previously, WhatsApp Web only supported one-on-one voice and video calls, limiting calling functionality compared to its mobile and desktop apps.
With the latest update, users in eligible beta groups can now make group voice and video calls directly from their web browsers.
This enhancement brings WhatsApp Web closer to feature parity with the mobile and desktop versions, offering a more consistent calling experience across platforms.
WhatsApp Web Set To Support Group Voice And Video Calls
WhatsApp Web is rolling out a new group calling feature for eligible users. A call button will appear at the top of group chats, allowing users to start voice or video calls directly from their browser.
Users can choose between voice and video calls and select specific group members to join, rather than automatically calling everyone in the chat.
The feature supports up to 32 participants for both voice and video calls, matching the limits available on WhatsApp’s mobile and desktop apps.
By keeping the same participant cap across platforms, WhatsApp ensures a consistent group calling experience whether users connect via web, desktop, or mobile.
WhatsApp confirmed that web-based group calls will use Signal-protocol end-to-end encryption, ensuring only participants can access the conversation—not WhatsApp or Meta.
Smarter Calling Features On WhatsApp Web
WhatsApp Web now supports call links, making it easy to create and share invite links for group calls. These links have unique URLs and automatically expire after 30 days of inactivity.
Users can also enable a waiting room, giving hosts more control over who joins the call.
Additionally, screen sharing is available during video calls, allowing users to present documents, slides, or other content directly from their browser. This feature is limited to video calls and is not supported in voice-only chats.
WhatsApp Web Expands Its Calling Features
WhatsApp is rolling out a handy update for WhatsApp Web users, making group calls more accessible directly from the browser. The feature is especially useful for Linux users, who currently don’t have a dedicated WhatsApp desktop app.
At the moment, the update is available only to a limited number of users enrolled in the WhatsApp Web beta program. This early access phase allows WhatsApp to test the feature before a wider release.
