Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, a 23-year-old Sikkim Scouts officer who had only been commissioned by the Army six months prior, died on May 22, 2025, while rescuing a fellow soldier in north Sikkim.
According to Army sources, the officer was in charge of a Route Opening Patrol headed for a Tactical Operating Base in Sikkim, a crucial location being readied for a future deployment.
Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, 23, led a route-clearing team from the 1st Battalion Sikkim Scouts on Thursday morning.Their main responsibility was to make sure the following forces could travel safely from Bichhu to Chu Junction (Sikkim).
“A patrol member named Agniveer Stephan Subba lost his balance while traversing a log bridge at approximately 11:00 a.m. and was carried away by the strong mountain stream. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Tiwari jumped into the perilous seas to save the Agniveer out of instinct”, one officer stated. Naik Pukar Katel, another soldier, also came right behind in support. They were able to save the Agniveer who was drowning together.
Sadly, Lieutenant Tiwari was taken by the strong current. Even though his patrol tried their best, they found his body 800 meters downstream by 11:30 a.m., according to the official. They also mentioned that the young officer’s bravery is a great representation of the Army’s core values and the strong connection between officers and soldiers, which goes beyond rank and is fostered in both times of war and peace.

His village, Majhwan Gaddopur, which is under the jurisdiction of the Ayodhya Cantt police, is getting ready to welcome their courageous son, who is anticipated to arrive by Friday night.
On Saturday, the last ceremonies will be held at Jamthara Ghat with full state honors.

Eastern Command’s army commander, Lt Gen RC Tiwari shared his heartfelt condolences on the passing of Lt Shashank Tiwari.
