Australia advanced to the World Cup in North America the following year, while Oman’s last-minute tie on Tuesday ruined Palestine’s hopes of making their first final appearance.
Direct rivals Saudi Arabia were upset 2-1 in Jeddah by Tony Popovic’s Socceroos, who entered the final match day of the third round as overwhelming favorites to advance, to secure the second automatic qualification slot in Group C.
Indonesia and Saudi Arabia will have to settle for a spot in the fourth round instead. As it was, Japan had already won the group.
“Now that we have a solid base, we want to improve even more, keep going, and try to do something exceptional at the World Cup”, stated Popovic.
Herve Renard’s team from Saudi Arabia entered the final match at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium aware that they needed to win by at least five goals to overtake Australia for second place.

The hosts kicked things off perfectly when Abdulrahman Al-Aboud scored just 19 minutes into the game. The visitors equalized right before half-time with a left-footed shot from Connor Metcalfe.
Australia quickly took the lead when, just three minutes into the second half, Mitch Duke connected with Martin Boyle’s cross to score with a header from close range.
Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan then made a crucial save against Salem Al-Dawsari’s late penalty, helping Australia clinch a memorable win and ensuring the nation made its sixth consecutive World Cup appearance in style.
“I’m thrilled to see that character, resilience, and the ability to bounce back and actually take charge to win the game”, Popovic expressed.
In Group B, Palestinian fans were left heartbroken after conceding a penalty in the dying moments, resulting in a 1-1 draw with Oman in Amman.
Palestine, hosting their matches at a neutral site, initially took the lead in the 49th minute when Oday Kharoub headed Adam Kaied’s corner into the top corner.
Oman found themselves down to 10 players in the 73rd minute when Harib Al-Saadi received his second yellow card.
Still, the visitors managed to fight back and grab a vital point in the 97th minute, with Issam Al-Sabhi scoring from the penalty spot after a foul on Muhsen Al-Ghassani.
As a result, Oman ends up in fourth place in the group, pushing Palestine out and moving on to the next stage of qualification.
The leading two teams from each of the three groups will head directly to the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, while the teams finishing in third and fourth will advance to the fourth round.
Scheduled for October, this round consists of two groups of three, with two spots available for next summer’s tournament. Oman, UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia are all competing for those spots.
Crystal Palace’s Daichi Kamada scored two goals for Japan, while Lee Kang-in from Paris Saint Germain found the net for South Korea, as both Asian powerhouses wrapped up their World Cup qualifying campaigns with flair.
Japan dominated with a 6-0 victory against Patrick Kluivert’s Indonesia in Osaka, and South Korea enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 win over Kuwait in Seoul, where fans got to see Son Heung-min make a late appearance.
FA Cup champion Kamada scored two goals in the first half for Japan, while Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino, and substitute Mao Hosoya also found the net against Indonesia, who ended up fourth in Group C.
Iran and Uzbekistan have already qualified for next year’s finals from Group A, along with Jordan and South Korea from Group B, both of whom clinched their spots last week with a match still to play.
Jeon Jin-woo, along with the European trio of Lee Kang-in, Oh Hyeon-gyu from Belgium’s Genk, and Lee Jae-sung from Germany’s Mainz, secured the victory.
Tottenham’s Son, who has been dealing with injuries, entered the game as a substitute in the 75th minute.
Iraq secured third place in the group with a 1-0 win over Jordan in Amman, with the hosts already having secured their first World Cup appearance.
