Google Maps is launching a fantastic new feature that lets users access Gemini for cyclists and walkers.

In a blog post, Google mentioned that Gemini can serve as your personal walking tour guide. Now, Google Maps users can ask questions like “OK Google, what neighbourhood am I in?” or “What are the best restaurants nearby?”.

In response, Gemini will suggest places along your route and provide information about your surroundings.

The update comes months after the company introduced Gemini-powered hands-free conversations for most navigation modes, including driving, public transport, and biking.

To use Gemini while you’re on foot or cycling and navigating with Google Maps, just tap the Gemini icon in the top right corner or activate the AI assistant by saying “Hey Google”.

For cyclists, Gemini now offers hands-free assistance so you can keep your eyes on the road.

For example, you can ask  “When’s my next meeting?” or “Text Mom I’m 15 minutes behind,” and the AI chatbot will send your message automatically.

Google Maps users will no longer need to unlock or use their phone to request information while on the go, which is really convenient.

It can also lower the risk of accidents and injuries because folks will be able to concentrate on the road instead of getting sidetracked by their phones.

Gemini replaces the previous voice commands, but users can still ask it for information from linked Google services, just like with the standalone app.

They can also inquire about trip-related details like parking spots, nearby eateries, EV charging stations, and gas stations.

Google Maps new AI upgrade for cycling and walking is currently being rolled out for both Android and iOS in areas where Gemini is accessible.

I got Gemini on my phone. It keeps trying to show up here and there. And I really don’t like the confusion about it

This is a practical upgrade. Hands free help for walkers and cyclists makes a lot of sense, especially if it actually reduces phone checking. Curious to see how useful the suggestions feel in real world use, not just on paper.
