On Monday(January 12,2026), Apple and Google revealed a multi-year partnership that will enable Apple’s upcoming AI features, including Siri, to utilize Google’s Gemini technology.

This collaboration signifies a major change for Apple, which has typically created its core technologies internally.

According to a joint statement, Google’s AI technology was selected by Apple after a “thorough evaluation” revealed it provided “the most capable foundation” for Apple’s AI objectives.

This announcement highlights a rare partnership between two companies that have historically been rivals in the smartphone arena, where Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems lead the global market.

Despite their competition, the two have enjoyed a profitable partnership for years, with Google paying Apple billions each year to be the default search engine on iPhones and other Apple devices.

This deal has come under scrutiny from regulators, with the US Department of Justice claiming in an antitrust case that it helps Google sustain its search monopoly, although a judge ruled that the arrangement could persist.

Competitors like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have been rolling out better and better AI models and features in a heated competition to dominate the market.

Even with this collaboration, Apple made it clear that its own AI system, Apple Intelligence, will be used to enhance its iPhones and iPads at the device level, all while upholding what they call “industry-leading privacy standards”.
