Asia Cup has turned into a battle for who gets to be the continent’s ‘second-best’ team.

With a place in the final at stake, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will clash for that title when they face off in the third Super Four match at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (September 23, 2025).

After losses to India and Bangladesh, respectively, Pakistan and Sri Lanka can only secure their fate with a win.

The destinies of Pakistan and Sri Lanka are intertwined, much like their history.

They both faced a game changing slowdown during the middle overs after a promising start in the PowerPlay during their last defeats.

Additionally, both teams have shown a tendency to crumble against less favored opponents, with Pakistan’s middle order shaken by the UAE and Sri Lanka nearly squandering a winning chance against Hong Kong.

The team that loses will still be in the running, but only on paper, depending on favorable outcomes and Net Run Rate scenarios to work in their favor.

Conditions favoring pace bowlers

The pitches here, unlike those in Dubai, have been more favorable to fast bowlers.

Both teams are expected to maintain their strategy of selecting two specialist seamers, supported by a seam bowling all rounder.

Sri Lanka has already secured two victories here earlier in the tournament, and their familiarity with the conditions might give them an advantage.
