Durga Puja is a significant Hindu festival honoring Goddess Durga, celebrated every year by the Bengali community in India.

Durga Puja is super famous in India, especially in the eastern states like Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, and of course, West Bengal, and it’s also recognized worldwide.

Also known as Durgotsav and Sharadotsav, Durga Puja is a four day celebration that takes place at the conclusion of the nine day Shardiya Navratri festivities.

During the Durga Puja festival, which is also called Durgotsava, Goddess Durga, the wife of Lord Shiva, is honored.

Reasons

The Goddess triumphed after fighting the buffalo demon Mahishasura, who claimed to be unbeatable and eternal, insisting that no woman could ever conquer him.

This festival honors the triumph of good over evil and also signifies Goddess Durga’s return to her earthly home.

Durga Puja In 2025

The Durga Puja festival takes place during the Devi Paksha (a fortnight), which spans fifteen days in the lunar month of Ashwin, aligning with September and October in the Gregorian calendar.

Durgotsav is observed over five days: Shashthi, Mahasaptami, Mahashtami, Mahanavami, and Vijayadashami.

This year, Durga Puja kicks off on September 28, 2025 (Sunday).

The main Hindu festival of Navratri starts on September 22, 2025 (Monday),The festivities will ends up on October 2, 2025 (Thursday), which is when Vijayadashami and Durga Visarjan take place.
