The Income Tax Department made it clear on Sunday (September 14, 2025) that the deadline for submitting Income Tax Returns (ITRs) hasn’t been pushed past September 15, dismissing rumors on social media about an additional extension.

The Income Tax department mentioned in a statement that there are fake messages going around claiming the deadline, which was initially set for July 31, 2025, and then extended to September 15, 2025, has now been moved to September 30.

However, the Income Tax Department clarified in a post on X that the actual due date for filing ITRs is still 15.09.2025.

The department advised taxpayers to stick to updates from its official handle @IncomeTaxIndia and not to get tricked by unverified posts.

It also mentioned that its helpdesk is available 24/7 to help taxpayers with ITR filing, tax payments, and other related services.

“To help taxpayers with ITR filing, tax payments, and other services, our helpdesk is operating around the clock, offering support via calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and Twitter/X”, it stated.

On Saturday, the Income Tax department announced that more than 6 crore ITRs have already been submitted for the Assessment Year 2025-26.

“A big thank you to taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us hit the 6 crore mark for Income Tax Returns (ITRs) so far, and we’re still counting! We encourage everyone who hasn’t filed their ITR for AY 2025-26 to do so as soon as possible to steer clear of any last-minute rush. Let’s keep this momentum going!”, the department shared in a post on X.

With Monday(15 September, 2025) being the last day to file ITRs, the department has reminded taxpayers to meet the deadline to avoid any penalties and interest.
