Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, known for his prolific skills, declared his immediate retirement from T20 international cricket on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

He mentioned that he wants to concentrate on his Test and ODI career.

“Test cricket has always been my top priority”,  the 35 year old mentioned in a statement.

He confirming he won’t participate in the T20 World Cup in February-March.

“I’ve enjoyed every single moment of every T20 match I’ve played for Australia, especially the 2021 World Cup”, he mentioned.

Starc, who has played 65 matches for his country in the shortest format, was a member of the Australia team that won the world title that year.

His 79 wickets in T20Is rank him as the second highest for Australia, following Adam Zampa.

Back in July, Starc delivered a stunning opening spell, leading to the West Indies being crushed for just 27 runs, marking the second-lowest score in Test history.

Starc has also hit the milestone of 400 Test wickets.

“As I look forward to the upcoming Indian Test tour, the Ashes, and the ODI World Cup in 2027, I believe this is the best path for me to stay fresh, fit, and perform at my peak for those events”, Starc stated.

He was a key player in the 2021 World Cup winning team and, like in all his cricket, he had a fantastic knack for turning games around with his ability to take wickets.

His announcement was made as Australia revealed their squad for the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand.

Cricket Australia’s CEO, Todd Greenberg, mentioned that giving the upcoming fast bowlers a straightforward route to the T20 World Cup next year is yet another instance of prioritizing the team.

He continued, “At this stage in Mitch’s career, it’s crucial for him to make choices that will help him prolong his Test and ODI careers for as long as he can, and we completely back that”.
