A number of flights heading to Bali, the Indonesian resort island, were cancelled, and the airport in Maumere, located in East Nusa Tenggara province, was shut down because of the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, officials reported on Wednesday (June 18, 2025).
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located in East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted on Tuesday, sending ash soaring 11 km into the sky, prompting the country’s volcanology agency to elevate the alert level to its highest point.
It blew its top once more on Wednesday morning (June 18), sending up an ash cloud that reached 1 km (0.62 miles) high, according to a statement from the agency. The Bali international airport website indicated that multiple international flights from India, Singapore, and Australia to Bali were cancelled because of the eruption.
The government shut down the Fransiskus Xaverius Seda airport in Maumere from Wednesday to Thursday “to guarantee passenger safety”, according to a post by the airport operator AirNav on Instagram.
The eruption led local officials to evacuate many residents from two villages close to the volcano, as stated by Avi Hallan, a representative from the local disaster management agency, to Reuters.
“The streets in those villages were covered in heavy ash, gravel, and sand”, she mentioned, noting that there were no reported casualties. The last eruption of the volcano occurred in May.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is known for its significant seismic activity due to the presence of several tectonic plates.
