Air India Flight AI-171, which was headed from Ahmedabad to London, went down shortly after taking off on Thursday afternoon (June 12, 2025). There were 242 individuals on the flight. According to reports from the state medical association, the plane crashed right onto the BJ Medical College UG hostel mess located in Meghani Nagar.
The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) stated that students were in the hostel mess when the crash occurred. Photos released by FAIMA reveal a section of the plane lodged in the hostel building, which appears to have sustained damage.
BJ Medical College, which is one of the biggest government medical college in Gujarat, is currently under scrutiny following news that the Air India Flight AI171 crash has affected the hostel mess area on campus – a spot that students often visit late at night. Early images and reports from the scene indicate that the crash happened near the student housing areas.

The hostel facilities can house hundreds of MBBS and postgraduate students, with many living on campus full-time. Students and faculty have described the chaos in the hostel mess as “unimaginable”.
Witnesses described a loud explosion as the plane descended rapidly shortly after takeoff, colliding with the college’s dining hall. The incident ignited a large fire and led to a partial collapse of the hostel, leaving many individuals trapped inside.

Several reports have stated that a number of young medical students have tragically lost their lives, while many others are still unaccounted for or in critical condition.
