OpenAI announced that it is launching a streamlined version of its upgraded memory feature for free users. Previously, this feature was exclusive to paid subscribers and enabled ChatGPT to more effectively recall previous conversations, thereby providing more tailored responses.

Short-term continuity across conversations is provided by a lightweight version of memory enhancements available to free users. A longer-term understanding of the user is provided by memory for Plus and Pro users, according to an OpenAI support page.

According to the firm, free users in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein will see a prompt in Settings to select the “Reference chat history” option. However, the feature is activated automatically for users who are not in the EU regions.

Additionally, users can use the Temporary conversation option or disable the “saved memories” or “chat history” options whenever they’d like.

In April, ChatGPT introduced the upgraded memory feature for Pro and Plus users, eliminating the need for them to provide context to the AI chatbot each time they logged in.
