Former champs Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are aiming to keep their comeback journey going strong as they lead India’s charge at the $1,450,000 Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament, kicking off in Jakarta on Tuesday (June 3, 2025).

After regaining their fitness with a strong semifinal showing at the Singapore Open last week, the former world No. 1 pair will be keen to give it their all this week and retrieve the title they took home in 2023.

Right now, Satwik and Chirag are sitting at 27th place, but they’re likely to move up into the top 20 after their performances in Singapore. They’ll kick off their campaign against the Indonesian pair of Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana at the Istora Senayan arena, which is considered the heart of badminton.

The situation at Istora works well for the Indians, and a victory could lead to a possible showdown with their rivals, Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who knocked them out last week and have a strong track record against the Indian pair.

Last week, the star duo showed off their signature brilliance by completely outplaying the world No. 1 Malaysian team of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, delivering a tactical masterclass on their way to the semifinals.

Two-time Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu is looking to make a significant impact after a series of disappointing performances this year.

The 29-year-old experienced a hamstring injury while training in Guwahati back in February, which prevented her from participating in the Asia Team Championships.Since her return, she has faced defeats against players like Thuy Linh Nguyen, Putri Kusuma Wardani, and Kim Ga Eun, resulting in early exits from tournaments.

Last week, the champion of the 2022 Commonwealth Games gave us a peek of her old self before just barely losing to Chen Yu Fei from China, the Tokyo Olympic champion, in the second round.

With the newly appointed Indonesian coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama by her side, Sindhu aims to regain her rhythm as she competes against a well-known rival, former world champion Nozomi Okuhara from Japan.

The pair has engaged in numerous thrilling matches throughout the years, with a closely contested head-to-head record that showcases their intense rivalry. The match scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025, is expected to be yet another exciting battle as both athletes strive to restore their prominence in the world of badminton. A victory could set up a clash between Sindhu, the 2019 World Champion, and Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in the subsequent round.

In the women’s singles category, Anupama Upadhyaya is set to compete against Korea’s Kim Ga Eun, Rakshitha Sree Ramraj will face Thailand’s left-handed player Supanida Katethong, and Malvika Bansod is scheduled to meet Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani.

In the men’s singles category, H.S. Prannoy, who earned a bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships, aims to restore his form as he competes against Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan.

Lakshya Sen, who earned a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships, is recovering from a back injury that compelled him to withdraw from last week’s tournament in Malaysia. The shuttler hailing from Almora has had a hard time getting back to his best since his semifinal appearance at the Paris Olympics and is up against a challenging first match against world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi from China.

Kiran George, his buddy from the PPBA academy, is set to challenge himself against the best as he kicks off his journey against former world champ Loh Kean Yew.

In the women’s duo, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand who’s gradually coming back from an injury are set to face Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto.

India will be represented by four pairs in the mixed doubles category: Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde Shivani, Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath, as well as Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh.
