Lionel Messi netted a goal and assisted three others for his Inter Miami squad as they triumphed over FC Cincinnati 4-0 on Sunday(November 23,2025).

It’s making it to their first Eastern Conference final.

Messi Set New Playoff Record

Thanks to his outstanding performance on Sunday(November 23,2025), Messi set a new MLS playoff record with 12 goal contributions (six goals and six assists).

Messi had gone scoreless in three previous matches against Cincinnati, but that changed in the 19th minute on Sunday when he headed in a short cross from Mateo Silvetti, putting Miami ahead 1-0.

Messi, who is a World Cup champion with Argentina and an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, scored his 11th goal in the last seven games.

Just nine minutes after his goal, Messi found himself one-on-one with the keeper, but his attempt towards the far post went wide.

Miami managed seven shots on goal compared to Cincinnati’s four.

The outcome was devastating for Cincinnati, who had the second-best overall record in MLS, just behind Philadelphia, after winning the Supporters Shield last season.

Cincinnati also faced defeat against the Columbus Crew in last year’s conference finals.

Cincinnati’s biggest opportunity to score happened in the first half when Ender Echenique directed a header across the box to Evander, who ended up shooting over the bar.

Messi’s Miami will now take on New York City FC, who secured their spot in the Eastern Conference final with a 1-0 victory against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday(November 22,2025).

The winner of the Inter Miami vs New York City FC match will move on to the MLS Cup on December 6.
