On Monday, ByteDance announced that it will be launching a voice control tool powered by artificial intelligence, which will first be available on a smartphone from ZTE Corp, with plans to expand to other brands later on.
This AI assistant, utilizing ByteDance’s well-known Doubao large language model, enables users to activate tasks through voice commands, like searching for content and booking tickets.
The new tool is set to compete with similar AI functionalities that have been rolled out by other Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Huawei and Xiaomi.
Apple has not yet released its Apple Intelligence in China, although Alibaba has mentioned a partnership with Apple to create AI features for iPhones in the region.
Initially, ByteDance’s AI voice tool will be featured on ZTE’s Nubia M153 handset, which is currently a prototype priced at 3,499 yuan ($495).
This device is available for pre-order in limited quantities.
In a statement, ByteDance clarified that it has no intentions of creating its own smartphones and is currently in discussions with various phone manufacturers to launch the AI voice assistant.
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin, has become a frontrunner in consumer AI applications in China, largely due to its chatbot Doubao.
