Women in blue arrived with big dreams, full of confidence.

For Harmanpreet Kaur’s team, this victory was significant in many ways.

Indians Rallied

Deepti Sharma, Amanjot Kaur, and Sneh Rana made sure the main host had enough runs to prevent the co-host from pulling off an unexpected win in the opening match of the women’s ODI World Cup.

After scoring 269 for eight in 47 overs – rain interrupted play for three overs.

But halfway through their innings, the Women in Blue found themselves in a nightmare.

Four wickets fell in just a couple of overs. Sri Lanka was on the verge of a takeover.

Inoka Ranaweera picked up three wickets in a single over, which really put the Indian dressing room on edge. However, Deepti, Amanjot, and Sneh managed to ease those tensions.

India bowled Sri Lanka out for 211, winning by 59 runs (DLS method) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

They triumphed even with their star batter, Smriti Mandhana, having an off day, proving they possess the batting depth necessary for a long tournament like the World Cup.

Their bowling was effective as well.

For Sri Lanka to really challenge, their captain Chamari Athapaththu (43 runs) needed to play a substantial innings. She was doing well until Deepti bowled her out.

India’s off spinning all rounder will cherish this match. Her determination with the bat was commendable.

Deepti (53 runs) partnered with Amanjot (57 runs) to add 103 runs for the seventh wicket and 42 runs for the eighth with Sneh (28 n.o., 15b).

This was Amanjot’s first ODI fifty, and she couldn’t have picked a better moment, especially on her World Cup debut.

She played confidently, kept the runs coming, and demonstrated why the team management was eager for her to return after her injury.

Amanjot was let off a few times, but she earned her good fortune. It took an incredible catch to end her innings, as Vishmi Gunaratne executed her dive perfectly near the deep mid wicket boundary.
