The Defending World Champion D Gukesh defeated American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana in an exciting Armageddon tie-break, while Arjun Erigaisi lost to Magnus Carlsen’s cunning on a mixed day for the Indians in the ‘Open’ division of Norway Chess in Stavanger.

World No. 3 Caruana had a pawn advantage for the majority of the Round 4 match against his Indian opponent, who turned 19 on Thursday, May 29, 2025, but Gukesh’s exceptional defensive abilities prevented the American from turning it into a sizable lead in more than four hours of captivating chess play.
The Armageddon tie-break was utilized to end the draw in the classical game. Gukesh earned 1.5 points from the match by outplaying Caruana on the clock.
With 4.5 points,The six-player field now has Gukesh and Erigaisi tied for fourth place.Carlsen has 8.0 points, Caruana has 7.0, while American general manager Hikaru Nakamura has 5.5.
Gukesh said that he typically dislikes playing on his birthday, but he was happy to have this important victory to booster his spirits.
“Since I always lose the game on my birthday, I’m relieved it didn’t happen in the classical today. I felt great while playing, but when I felt like I was losing, I thought, ‘Okay, not again’”,he remarked.
Erigaisi loses to Carlsen.This victory on home soil was a powerful statement for the Norwegian player, who had dropped two Armageddon games in the previous rounds.
Men – Hikaru Nakamura (USA, 5.5) lost to Wei Yi (Chn, 4). Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 8 points) defeated Arjun Erigaisi (Ind, 4.5 points). D Gukesh (Ind, 4.5 points) defeated Fabiano Caruana (USA, 7 points) in Armageddon tie-break.
Women – In the Armageddon tie-break, Sara Khadem (Esp, 5) defeated Li Tingjie (Chn, 4). Ju Wenjun (Chn, 5.5) defeated Koneru Humpy (Ind, 7) and R. Vaishali (Ind, 3,5) defeated Anna Muzychuk (Ukr, 7).
