South Africa secured a historic victory over Afghanistan in the 2026 T20 World Cup, with the match decided in a dramatic second Super Over.

South Africa and Afghanistan faced off in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2026 on Wednesday (February 11, 2026), at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Match Summary

Earlier, Rashid Khan won the toss, chose to bowl first.

Batting first, South Africa captain Aiden Markram got out early.

De Kock and Rickelton brought some stability to the innings for the 2024 finalists, putting together 114 runs off just 61 balls before both were dismissed in the same over by Rashid Khan.

Quinton De Kock scored 59 runs off 41 balls, while Ryan Rickelton scored 61 runs off 28 balls.

Dewald Brevis had a tough time picking up the pace, getting out for 23 runs (19 balls), but some late efforts from David Miller, who stayed not out on 20 runs from 15 balls, and Marco Jansen’s quick 16 off just seven balls helped South Africa wrap up with a solid total.

South Africa had set a target of 188 runs by scoring 187/6 in their 20 overs.

Azmatullah Omarzai took three wickets for Afghanistan. Fazalhaq Farooqi, however, took one wicket.

While chasing 188 runs, Afghanistan lost Ibrahim Zadran in the fifth over, as he went out for 12 runs off 10 balls.

After ten overs, Afghanistan scored 93/3. Gurbaz hit four fours and seven sixes while scoring at an incredible strike rate of 200.

Gurbaz’s impressive innings ended at 84 runs; Azmatullah Omarzai (22 runs) and Rashid Khan (20 runs) took over and ensured they stayed in the game against South Africa.

Heading into the final over, Afghanistan needed 13 runs to clinch the win. Just when South Africa was counting on a solid performance from Kagiso Rabada, the pacer had a rough over, starting with a no ball and a wide.

Afghanistan steadily reached 187, but Farooqi’s run out pushed the match into the tournament’s first super over.

Super Over

Afghanistan batted first in the super over, and Azmatullah Omarzai struck a four and a six off the first two balls, bringing his team to 17/0.

With South Africa keeping pace, the match moved into yet another super over.

In the second super over, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs teamed up to score 23 runs without losing a wicket.

Keshav Maharaj from South Africa got things rolling perfectly by taking out Mohammad Nabi on the second ball.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashed three sixes in a row during the key match and nearly led Afghanistan to a win, but they couldn’t finish it off.

South Africa kept their cool and limited Afghanistan to 19 runs for 2 wickets.
